Introduction

Rachel Eardley is a part-time PhD student split between University of Bristol and Cardiff Metropolitan University, School of art and design. With a background in design, that includes 15 years industrial experience as a user experience designer and an MA in industrial design with distinction from Central Saint Martins, her research focuses on the human within the HCI field. For her PhD Rachel is investigating how the human hand interacts with technology devices that are designed to be handheld. Using qualitative and quantitive studies to understand how participants use their hands to grip, rotate or tilt technology devices such as the touchscreen mobile phone. In order to gain an understand in how user experience designers can push beyond designing just for the devices touchscreen and create more compelling experiences by designing for the mobile phone as a physical device. During Rachel's 15 years of industrial experience she has had the opportunity to work in a wide range of environments including Research labs, international corporations, early stage startups, academia, and agency. Currently, she works 4 days a week at Somo as a Senior UX designer. To find out more about her industrial experience please view her Linkedin profile.
